The biosand filter is a household-scale drinking water treatment system intended for use in rural and impoverished areas

چکیده

The intermittent slow sand filter (biosand filter) is a household-scale drinking water treatment system known for its simplicity and ease of use. This research examines several factors affecting the flowrate of the biosand filter as well as schmutzdecke disturbance, volume of water treated, and previous microbial loading to determine their effect on removal of microbes. It is recommended that a modification of the underdrain system be adopted and that the volume of each charge of raw water applied to a biosand filter not exceed 80% of the filter’s void volume.

Evaluation of the Impact of the Plastic BioSand Filter on Health and Drinking Water Quality in Rural Tamale, Ghana

A randomized controlled trial of the plastic BioSand filter (BSF) was performed in rural communities in Tamale (Ghana) to assess reductions in diarrheal disease and improvements in household drinking water quality. Few studies of household water filters have been performed in this region, where high drinking water turbidity can be a challenge for other household water treatment technologies. Du...

A randomized controlled trial of the concrete biosand filter and its impact on diarrheal disease in Bonao, Dominican Republic.

A number of household water treatment and safe storage technologies, such as chlorine disinfection, solar disinfection, and ceramic filtration, have been documented for their ability to reduce diarrheal disease and improve microbial water quality. The biosand filter (BSF) is a promising household water treatment technology in use by > 500,000 people globally. The purpose of this research was to...

Determine Components of Household Water Consumption Per Capita in Rural Communities (Case Study: South Khorasan province, Iran)

The piped water consumption per capita is more than 142 cubic meters per year in Iran that is higher than the consumption per capita of some water-filled European countries such as Belgium and Austria. The use of drinking water for washing dishes, clothes, cars as well as bathing and watering gardens are of the important reasons for piped water high consumption in Iran. However, different lifes...

Removal of Escherichia coli and Faecal Coliforms from Surface Water and Groundwater by Household Water Treatment Devices/Systems: A Sustainable Solution for Improving Water Quality in Rural Communities of the Southern African Development Community Region

There is significant evidence that household water treatment devices/systems (HWTS) are capable of dramatically improving microbially contaminated water quality. The purpose of this study was to examine five filters [(biosand filter-standard (BSF-S); biosand filter-zeolite (BSF-Z); bucket filter (BF); ceramic candle filter (CCF); and silver-impregnated porous pot (SIPP)] and evaluate their abil...
